Witnessing Oracle was an evocative experience, creating a feeling of times gone by and an eerie reminiscence of a childhood fairy tale somehow gone awry. The Slavic story of Baba Yaga is reconstructed as a darkly whimsical journey of youth and innocence transformed into newborn courage and an inner knowing. We watch, feeling captured and helpless, as young Lisa meanders through a shadowy forest, toward confronting the portentous figure of Baba Yaga. The story is heavily draped in symbolism and a sense of mystery. Filmmaker Zohie Castellano seamlessly interweaves her fascination and expertise in costume design with Eastern European mythology and history, to make a tale that captures our imaginations. She creates a feeling of uneasy familiarity, with which we revisit our own coming of age stories and the challenges and triumphs embedded in overcoming our fears and learning to trust our intuition.
